2. Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is another highly contagious viral disease in dogs.  This condition can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological problems.

Causes

The canine distemper virus spreads through airborne exposure to respiratory secretions.

It affects various body systems, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.

Puppies are particularly vulnerable.

Symptoms

Early signs of the condition include:

  • Fever
  • Nasal discharge
  • Coughing
  • Lethargy

More advanced signs like neurological issues (twitching, seizures) follow the above symptoms.

Treatment

For dogs with canine distemper, supportive care is necessary, including:

  • Antibiotics to prevent secondary infections
  • Anticonvulsants for seizures
  • Fluids to combat dehydration

Vaccination is essential for prevention.
